Which laptop for Archicad?

Archicad is one of the major BIM software used in architecture. In the same family as Revit, it is used to produce a digital model, produce plans, manage sections, parts lists, layouts, linked files and sometimes collaborative work with Teamwork or BIMcloud.

On paper, Archicad is less tricky than Revit on one point: it really exists on Windows and on macOS. So this is one of the few BIM software that can justify purchasing a MacBook Pro, provided the rest of your software follows suit.

But that doesn't mean that just any laptop will do. The size of the models, the number of views, the libraries, the linked files, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Twinmotion or Enscape open alongside can quickly increase the needs.

For Archicad, first look at the platform, processor, RAM and SSD. If the model often goes to Twinmotion, Enscape, Lumion, D5 Render or V-Ray GPU, add the graphics card in the criteria not to be cut.

This is the big difference with Revit: Archicad really runs on Mac and PC. But before buying a Mac, still check the plugins, rendering and agency habits.

To learn or do simple residential work, a recent Core Ultra 5, Ryzen 5 or Apple M may be sufficient. For a real work machine, aim for Core Ultra 7, Ryzen 7, Core i7/i9 HX or MacBook Pro M Pro.

RAM32 GB to aim for, 64 GB if heavy BIM

16 GB can be spent on small projects. With Teamwork, BIMcloud, linked files, PDFs, Photoshop or Twinmotion open alongside, 32 GB quickly avoids working in cramped conditions.

GPURTX 5050/5060 on PC, more if rendered

Archicad alone does not necessarily require a huge RTX. On Windows laptop, an RTX 5050 or 5060 already gives some margin; RTX 5070, 5080 or 5090 if Twinmotion, Enscape, Lumion or V-Ray GPU comes up often.

Storage1TB NVMe SSD recommended

512 GB fills up quickly with libraries, PLA files, PDF exports, renders, archives, caches and synchronized projects. 2 TB is quieter in the agency.

With Archicad, the MacBook can truly serve as a BIM station. Not just a nice computer for emails, PDFs and layout. But you have to configure it to work, not buy the first attractive model in the range.

The point not to be missed is the unified memory and the SSD. On MacBook, you don't leave thinking "I'll add more later". You have to take enough when purchasing.

Light mobility

Possible for learning, moving around, opening small models and working especially on Archicad, office automation and Adobe. But as the main Archicad machine to keep for several years, I would put it behind the MacBook Pro.

Mac benchmark

48 GB targeted / 1 TB

This is the one I would look at first on the Mac side: quite mobile, more solid under load than an Air, and more reassuring if SketchUp, Rhino, Photoshop or Twinmotion remain open next to it. A 24 GB version can pass, but it leaves less margin.

Worth checking if the laptop is your main screen. Plans, palettes, 3D views, layouts and PDFs take up space. The 16 inch weighs more, but it is less pulling on a real day.

Big budget

64 GB+ / 2 TB

Reserve for large projects or Mac-compatible 3D scenes. If you're primarily looking to accelerate Lumion, D5 Render or V-Ray GPU Nvidia, a Windows RTX laptop often makes more sense.

The simple rules

  • For a Archicad main workstation, aim for at least 32 GB of unified memory and 1 TB of SSD.
  • Avoid the MacBook Air 16GB/512GB as a long-lasting purchase if you plan to work seriously on it.
  • Take a MacBook Pro rather than an Air if Archicad stays open for a long time with Photoshop, SketchUp, Rhino or Twinmotion next to it.
  • Stay with a Windows laptop if Revit, Lumion, D5 Render, or Nvidia V-Ray GPU are part of your regular workflow.

Are you hesitating between MacBook and Windows laptop?

Archicad and Revit: same family, not exactly the same purchase

Archicad and Revit require the same base: responsive processor, enough RAM, fast SSD and comfortable screen. Slowdowns rarely occur when opening a small model alone. They arrive when views multiply, links are added and several tools remain open nearby.

The real difference is the platform. Revit grows almost naturally into a Windows laptop. Archicad really leaves the choice between Windows and Mac. It's practical, but it requires you to look further than the main software: rendering, plugins, IFC exchanges, agency tools, employee habits.

What really weighs down Archicad

A small residential project can run smoothly on a fairly reasonable machine. But an agency model is not just “a Archicad file”. There are libraries, linked modules, views, sections, schedules, layouts, IFC files, sometimes Teamwork and BIMcloud.

And as with Revit, Archicad almost never works alone. AutoCAD, PDF, browser, Photoshop, spreadsheet, email, sometimes SketchUp Gold Twinmotion remain open nearby. This is why 32 GB of RAM is the most reasonable benchmark for a new purchase. 16 GB can fit at first, but don't expect much headroom.

Archicad alone or Archicad with rendering: do not mix everything

For Archicad alone, the priority remains above all CPU, RAM, SSD and screen. A decent graphics card helps with 3D, but that's not the same issue as Lumion or Twinmotion.

If you often send the model to Twinmotion, Enscape, D5 Render, Lumion, or V-Ray GPU, the graphics card is no longer a minor detail. On Windows, aim for at least an RTX 5060, an RTX 5070 or 5080 for frequent rendering, or an RTX 5090 for very large projects and demanding exports. On Mac, look for a MacBook Pro with an M Pro or M Max chip and enough unified memory.

Screen, SSD and format: the details that change the day

On Archicad, we spend a lot of time between plans, sections, 3D views, palettes, properties, browser and layouts. We have a small screen, everything packs down quickly. A 16 inch 16:10 gives more space without falling into the laptop that is impossible to carry.

SSD also deserves to be taken seriously. Between PLN/PLA files, libraries, PDF exports, images, renderings, archives and synchronized folders, 512 GB fills up quickly. For a sustainable purchase, go with 1 TB. If you keep a lot of projects local, 2 TB is not absurd.

Frequently asked questions

Is Archicad compatible with Mac Apple Silicon?

Yes. Archicad runs on recent Apple Silicon Macs, and this is one of its big advantages over Revit. For a main station, avoid the MacBook which is too tight: instead aim for a MacBook Pro with enough unified memory, especially if you keep Photoshop, SketchUp or Twinmotion open alongside.

Do you need a dedicated graphics card for Archicad?

On a Windows PC, I would go for a dedicated RTX for a serious new purchase, at least RTX 5050 or 5060. Archicad alone can remain reasonable, but if you often send the model to Twinmotion, Enscape, Lumion or V-Ray GPU, avoid GPUs integrated. On Mac, the Apple GPU is part of the chip, so the reasoning is different.

Are recent versions of Archicad faster?

Yes, but don't just rely on software version to save a machine too fair. A new version may improve some operations, but if you're short on RAM, SSD, or power handling, big projects will still be painful.

Can we use Archicad on a gaming PC?

Yes. A good recent gaming PC can make a very good Archicad station: Core Ultra 7 or Ryzen 7, RTX 5050/5060 minimum, 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD. The only trap is to choose a machine with 512 GB of SSD or 16 GB of RAM blocked because the rest of the sheet seems attractive.
