Which laptop for architecture students?
In architecture school, the ideal laptop must be able to handle a lot of things: BIM projects on Archicad or Revit, models SketchUp, 3D renderings on Lumion or D5 Render, retouching on Photoshop, dozens of PDFs opened at the same time, and all that for several years.
Because a good laptop for architecture students should not only perform well on the day of purchase. It must also be able to last over time, ideally for the entire course, i.e. a good five years.
And this is where the choice becomes tricky.
Concretely, you especially need to pay attention to the processor + graphics card duo. These are the two most important components, but also the most difficult, if not impossible, to replace on a laptop.
RAM, also known as RAM, and SSD storage can sometimes be increased over time. But this is not always the case, especially on thin or very compact machines. It is therefore better to avoid going too tight from the start.

Start with what cannot be replaced
Once the budget is set, the first instinct should be simple: first look at the processor and the graphics card. They are the ones who will decide a good part of the power of the PC. And these are also the components that you will almost never be able to change.
On a Windows laptop for architecture students, the graphics card should not be a simple integrated chip. To last a minimum, aim for an RTX 5050 at least. This is not luxury: it is the floor from which the PC maintains real margin for 3D, rendering and growing projects.
Next, look at the RAM and SSD. 16 GB and 512 GB can help out at first, yes. But for a machine expected to last several years, 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of SSD avoid a lot of frustration.
Be careful though: that doesn't mean you have to put everything in the graphics card and sacrifice the rest. A decent RTX with only 16GB of RAM soldered on, a mediocre screen, or an SSD that's too small may very well become a bad buy.
In short, whatever the budget, the order of priority remains quite simple: first the processor + graphics card duo, then the RAM and the SSD, then the format of the laptop, that is to say its mobility, its autonomy and its daily comfort.

Before buying, research the software you actually use
In many architecture schools, we don't always have a clear list from the start. There are officially recommended software, those that teachers actually use, those that students pass among themselves, and those that only arrive later in the course.
The right reflex is therefore not to invent an ultra-precise profile even before the start of the school year. Instead, try to understand the school's software environment: Revit or Archicad? SketchUp or Rhino? Lumion, Twinmotion or D5 Render? Windows required or Mac accepted?
And if no one gives you a clear answer, start with the least risky basis: a Windows laptop with a real RTX, solid enough to withstand several scenarios, without buying too low today or overpaying for an extreme machine.

16 GB gets you started. 32 GB quickly becomes much more comfortable as soon as Revit, Archicad, SketchUp, Photoshop and the browser remain open at the same time. 64 GB is mainly for large models and heavy BIM.
512 GB, it fills up quickly
At first, that seems enough. Then come the software, models, textures, exports, caches and backups. If the budget allows it, 1 TB avoids having to sort every three projects.
You will watch it for hours
Plans, details, retouching, boards, juries: the screen is not a detail. A panel that is too dark or mediocre tires quickly, even if the rest of the technical sheet seems attractive.
The PC must also be transported
A power monster that stays on the desk isn't much use if you have to move between school, workshop, train and home. Look at the weight, battery life and format before you decide.

Prices move all the time. But bad decisions often come up: too little RAM, an SSD that's too small, an average screen, or a PC that's attractively priced because it doesn't have a real dedicated graphics card.

In the first year, you may have the impression that an average PC will be more than enough. Then the files grow, the renderings arrive, the boards multiply. The PC you buy today must therefore have a little margin for the future.

School software must decide the machine
If you already know the software used in your school, start there. A MacBook can be very nice for taking notes, doing layouts or working on Adobe. But if Revit, Lumion or D5 Render dominate the curriculum, choosing Windows with RTX becomes much simpler.

Which configuration should you choose in the end?
In the end, don't try to check all the boxes on a technical sheet. Above all, look for the PC that fits your school, your budget, and the software that you are likely to use.
Tight budget
Aim for at least an RTX 5050, 16 GB of RAM, a recent CPU and a 512 GB SSD. If the budget only allows for an integrated graphics card, this is not a good purchase for the last several years.
Purchase for several years
Target 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD and RTX 5050/5060. This is the quietest area so as not to regret too quickly.
Heavy rendering and BIM
If Lumion, D5, Twinmotion, Enscape, heavy Revit or heavy Archicad become central, go for 32 to 64 GB of RAM, RTX 5060/5070 and 1 TB SSD minimum.
MacBook
Yes, but only if the school validates macOS and if your main tools are Archicad, SketchUp, Rhino and Adobe. If Revit, Lumion or D5 dominate, take Windows.
Windows or MacBook for an architecture student?
If you don't yet know what the school will ask, Windows remains the least risky choice. Revit, Lumion and D5 Render clearly push in this direction. And for the same budget, a Windows laptop with a minimum RTX 5050 often gives more margin than a machine that looks good on paper but is too limited on the 3D side.
The MacBook can be excellent if the school works with Archicad, SketchUp, Rhino, Adobe and macOS compatible tools. But in this case, take enough memory from the start, because it cannot be added later. This is THE point not to be missed.

Should you buy very powerful from the first year?
Not necessarily. Buying too small can be expensive later, but buying a huge machine in the first year isn't always smart either. If your school is starting slowly and your budget is limited, a solid foundation with true RTX is better than a poorly balanced extreme PC.
The right guideline: don't go below the useful floor, then put the money where it will really be used. Very often, this means RTX 5050 or 5060, 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of SSD, rather than a more expensive RTX with too little RAM.
gaming laptop: good idea or bad idea?
Many gaming laptops are interesting for the architecture because they offer a real graphics card for the price. But be careful: some are heavy, noisy, not very autonomous, or delivered with a frankly average screen.
So look at the weight, brightness, quality of the panel and autonomy. A powerful PC that always stays at home doesn't help much when you have to present a project at school.
