This is the central question for sizing your PC. V-Ray GPU uses the graphics card to render quickly and iterate quickly. It is often the best choice for SketchUp, Rhino or 3ds Max when scenes fit in VRAM.

V-Ray CPU remains relevant for scenes that exceed available VRAM, large exteriors, certain Mac workflows or renderings that must prioritize system memory. It requires a high-end CPU and more patience.

VRAM: the limiting criterion of V-Ray GPU

Unlike RAM, the VRAM of a portable GPU is not added after purchase. When a scene exceeds available graphics memory, you lose the GPU's speed advantage or have to reduce textures, proxies, and details.

In practice, a RTX 5060 covers a lot of residential scenes. HAS RTX 5070 is more comfortable for detailed interiors and commercial projects. HAS RTX 5080 or 5090 is justified for intensive rendering, large exteriors, animations and very textured scenes.

Host software changes PC choice

V-Ray is not used alone. With SketchUp, you are often looking for fast iteration and good VRAM. With Rhino, Grasshopper and meshes can add heavy CPU/RAM load. With 3ds Max or Revit, scenes and libraries can become much heavier.

So don't just choose a PC "for V-Ray". Choose a machine for everything: host software, scene size, rendering resolution, export frequency and real mobility.

Cooling: the true judge of a laptop V-Ray

A V-Ray render can load the GPU or CPU for several tens of minutes. A thin laptop can display a good technical sheet then reduce its frequency as soon as the temperature rises.

For V-Ray in production, prefer a 16 or 17 inch chassis with robust power supply, efficient fans and stable performance mode. The noise is less annoying than a rendering that lasts twice as long because the machine muffles itself.

V-Ray on Mac: possible, but to be regulated
